2008. These are all our locations for Claws during 2008. He covered a much larger area than any other Osprey we have tracked on the wintering grounds.

Below are maps in chronological order beginning with January '08.
1-15 Jan '08. Claws continues to explore northern Venezuela. He began the month just north of Lago Valencia. He made a quick loop south and west on the 2nd, and then returned to the lake. On the 8th he headed east to an area he has frequented fairly often. On the 13th he got a bit of wanderlust and headed west to Lago Valencia and beyond. On the 15 he went as far west as he has been in Venezuela and was heading back southeast when we last heard from him on the 15th.
15-31 Jan '08. Claws returned to Lago Valencia on the 16th, and then pushed east to familiar ground. On the 28th he made a quick, two-day round trip to the Lake. This round trip was about 100 mi (160 km).

Feb '08. Nothing new here.

Mar '08. Still cycling through places he's seen before.
Apr 08. Still can't make up his mind
May 08. He seems to have narrowed the field of candidates for a wintering spot to four reservoirs. Location C is quite small. The distance from A to D is 32 mi. (52 km). Details of these four spots are below.
 Location A.
 Location B.
 Location C.
Location D. This is the largest of the reservoirs he visits. It's about 8.5 mi. (14 km) across at its widest.
June 08. He spent most of the month at the same four locations, with a junket up towards Caracas. By this time in Homer's first trip to South America he had settled down at a reservoir about 80 mi. (130 km) west of Claws' southern stronghold at the bottom of this map.
July 08. He has added a new small reservoir near Santa Teresa (the northeastern most cluster of points) to the itinerary.
August 08. Here are all the locations for the month. Below I've broken his travels down into more-or-less weekly installments.
29 July-5 Aug 08. Claws started up in the central cluster of points southwest of Charallave, moved down to the large reservoir, and then made another loop through his northern fishing holes, winding up the week back at the reservoir. This is clearly his favorite spot--at the moment.
6-13 Aug 08. Another trip north.
12-19 Aug 08. So much for settling down at the reservoir he likes so much (which is a bit south of this map)! He began this week up by Santa Teresa, flew west to the Charallave res on the 14th, then down to Ocumare. On the 16th he made a cameo appearance near Santa Teresa, then that same day over to Charallave. Back to Ocumare on the 17th. He must be getting dizzy.
It's 15 mi. (25 km) from the Santa T reservoir to the one SW of Charallave. He could make that trip in 45 minutes.
19-25 Aug 08. He began this week at the Charallave reservoir, flew over to Santa Teresa on the 20th and back to Charallave on the 24th.
Sept 08.
More of the same here.
Oct 08. Thanks to some help from Venezuelan ornithologist Adrian Naveda-Rodriguez, we now have names for some of the locations Claws has been commuting between. With the exception of the Monte Claro Clube (a quiet retreat for Caracas's elite), all are reservoirs. The Loma de Niquel Reservoir is on the Mesia River and is associated with a nickle mine.
Nov 08.
Dec 08.
